The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door.

Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes on the floor with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate does not mean that is suddenly your food, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the top of the stairs is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It Is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space that you are taking up, is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND COMPLAIN
(1) They live here....you don't.

(2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.

That's why they call it “fur”-niture.

(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don't ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don't hang out with drug-using people;

(7) don't smoke or drink,

(8) don't want to wear your clothes,

(9) don't have to buy the latest fashions,

(10) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and

(11) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children.....

I read Where the Bros are: A Guide to TV's Top 10 Male Bonding Shows in July and thought it was okay. However, the list was built for the "Standard Viewer" in my opinion; 18 to 34 / 25 to 42.

In the interest of full disclosure I am not a fan/watcher/follower of; medical drama, reality, contests, cartoons and anything with a laugh track. I am, however, big on; cop, spy, lawyer, comedy and procedural forms with solid writing. Alright, who just said the words, Arrogant & Elitist? The good thing about TV programming is choice. If one theme or format drives a viewer to insanity there is another viewer who thinks that same show is the best show on TV.

I saw this odd critter when my wife dumped her bag of Human Resources Conference give-a-ways on the table. For those folks who never attended such a conference it is an estrogen party, therefore, my question is not that crazy.

My question was, "They had a toy store booth on the vendor floor?" Naturally she looked at me with the what-the-fuck-are-you-talking-about look. Me being the gentleman I am, I picked up a little blue thing that looked kind of like ......

Now it was her turn to stare. Not at me but at the tool. "Oh My God, is that what I think it is? I don't know where it came from." I thought, "I am allowed to be confused because lights are off and with just window light it is easy to confuse the instruments - she has to be pulling my leg."

With all the tact I can fit in one statement I replied, "Right, and I wish I had the dildo booth over there too. With a 90% skirts to jockstraps ratio it is a windfall profit." (Close to what was said then. Darn memory) At that point it was laugh as if Robin Williams told the Viagra joke, me knocking over an empty wine bottle which made her laugh more. It was just one of those moments.

As composure set back in, she said with a total straight face, "You know, that does sound like it would work. Print company logos and whatever advertisements on them and it could pay for inventory." This is where I just stare, totally derailed; expected the you-are-full-of-sexist-shit-look. "Cool", I said.

Now that the comedy hour was over we actually tried to write with the damn thing. She said it was cute but not her kind of writing tool (Ok, she really said pen.) and gave it to me. I of course asked for batteries. Which got the eye roll instead of a comment. And that is the story of the "little blue pen that is not a rocket ship" and not the purple thing shown in the picture above.

Where do I go from here? I could pull the buzzer out of an old Beeper and wire it up in the "not Rocket" and make it a rock-it. No, that would lead to breaking who knows how many laws in some Baptist states. But it would be fun breaking those laws.

We React To Ads In Unplanned Ways: Fells Point Has Gone To The Tourists

This is how Fells Point looked before the tourists took over. All the fun bars are gone, replaced with brand name restaurants, trendy shops and a hotel I never heard of.

The scruffy waterfront is postcard pretty to some but it is so packaged up for the sell, sell, sell I want to drop my wine bottle and vomit in the street. Damit I don't care about the "don't scare the ~~horses~~ visitors" rule.

The reason for all this anger is simple. I had a boatload of fun down in Fells Point. A bunch of us would ride down, park, shoot pool, drink beer at a cheap price and have a blast. That was followed by sitting on the bikes till the cops got tired of watching us and left. At that time it was safe to go home by putting up S. Broadway to the Interstate. Work the next day was usually as rough as the starched shirt collar and got as ugly as the mandatory tie. BUT WE HAD FUN the night before.

Present day: JFAC as one friend would say if he saw the current sanitized Fell Point. And before I forget I would like to thank the folks who put this editorial in my head.

Can Hollywood Blame Everyone Except Management for Lost Jobs?

With a question like, Can Hollywood Blame Everyone Except Management for Lost Jobs?, as the title there should there be a punch line. Sorry no can do, every punch line I think of is a paragraph sized rant. On with the show.

With distractions like the MPAA campaign of disinformation, AFL-CIO: Digital Theft Hurts U.S. Workers which is about "Rogue Sites" and "Streaming Theft" taking away jobs. And while the MPAA was circling the wagons around PROTECT IP [ Video: Why The Act Is Bad ] as if it was Hollywood's job savior; employees in DVD products are getting laid off. This is not due to the myth of lost sales but because the movie industry has not marketed DVD products very well. The business model of treating DVD media products of all types as a cash cow without alternatives failed.

At this point I could overload this post with links to sites that link back to a site that has a paragraph describing DVD vs streaming a la Netflix or Amazon but that is your adventure. I am just making a point that the movie industry is seeing the fruits of its arrogance today. Here is the rundown of layoffs because of "declining DVD sales" due to pressure from streaming video.

Fox Lays Off 22 Staffers In Home Entertainment

Just because the movies seem to be working this summer and the flood of deals at Cannes indicated that the appetite has returned to the acquisitions business, that doesn't mean studios are immune to layoffs. Fox has become the fourth studio this week to lop staff. The studio has laid off 12 in home entertainment and 10 in IT. It's described as a minor realignment that occurred mostly in the analytics group for Fox Home Entertainment and the IT group that supports them.

Warner Bros Lays Off 50 In Home Entertainment & Consumer Products

deadline, EXCLUSIVE: That's about 1% of the Warner Bros' total domestic work force. When I asked about it, Warner Bros Entertainment issued this statement, “As part of the continual review of our business operations, Warner Bros. Entertainment will be undertaking limited staff reductions in our home entertainment and consumer products divisions. The total number of employees and positions impacted by these reductions is a relatively small percentage of our domestic workforce.”

Now Disney And Lionsgate Laying Off Staff

Add Walt Disney Studios and Lionsgate to the companies laying off staff. Disney's will be roughly 5% largely in the distribution area with other areas impacted as well. Lionsgate laid off less than 20 people as part of a reorganization affecting home entertainment and service areas. And, Viacom No. 2 Phillippe Dauman said this about Paramount Pictures signalling what may be layoffs there: "As the home entertainment stream is challenged, fewer DVDs are being sold, so you have to review your home entertainment overhead. That's adjusting to the business model. We’re very focused on that. We continue to work on the overhead there."

Did Philippe Dauman Say He Plans Job Cuts At Paramount Home Video? You Decide

deadline, UPDATE, 3:50 PM: The folks at Paramount say that we misunderstood Dauman. He wasn't trying to say that he plans to make cuts at home entertainment, they say. He was simply talking in general terms about being vigilant about all of Paramount's costs. That's not how it looks to me, but why don't you decide for yourself? Here's the transcript of Dauman's response to a question about how he might "improve Paramount's fortunes":

"There are some things you can control in the movie business…that is the overhead. It doesn't matter what movie you make. You can control that; that's money in the bank if you can do that. And we have continuously improved that part of it. You continually have to adjust. For example, as the home entertainment stream is challenged, fewer DVDs are being sold, so you have to review your home entertainment overhead. That's adjusting to the business model. We’re very focused on that. We continue to work on the overhead there."

The auto play of music, advertisements & video of any type is insane. Computers are powerful enough I can record audio and browse the internets. It is arrogant and impolite to blast browser audio all over a task with[out] user permission.

The solution, of course, is to buy a utility that shuts down all audio out from sources other than the one wanted.

When I found out Xfinity App for Android was in the Market all I could think of was watching TV shows on the phone when I wished. OK, I admit that was a bit of wishful thinking on my part. I know the whole desktop Xfinity (AKA Fancast.com) would not fit into the structure of my G2.

What was delivered is the myDVR Manager, TV Listings, On Demand trailers and of course SmartZone Email (Digital Voice too, but I don't use it). All in all a nice start to pulling the desktop into the phone environment.

While writing this I am scrolling thru HD channels looking for the basketball game I am missing; may just tell the Number 1 DVR to record it. Maybe not because I am still fussing with search. A search using the words college basketball returns much including football and "The Office". I'll have more on that another day. [Note: It would be nice if TV guide remembered where I was when a miss tap the screen and I am sent Home. A nice thing when such things are done to the User Interface.]

Today I address Settings problems. The T-Mobile G2 has a force quit result when tapping Notification Sound:

At Oh-Dark-Thirty I drive to store to resupply Dr Pepper and check quality of audio disk made in iT(unes). Nothing makes me more nervous than an AudioCD made from from MP3. It is an affront to nature and sets me off in a way I could power a Saturn V stage. The squished out frequencies & other damage can be "sorta" fixed using DVD2OneX Audio Remaster after converting MP3 to PCM (AIFF or WAV).

So, this cat is supplied with all the necessary tools for mischief and it is -2C outside. What to do at such an early hour? Not freezing fingers off is a plus. Inventory: 1 - audio CD, 1 - G2 mobile (T-Mobile), 1 - automobile with audio system [heated] (Ford Taurus X) and munchies & Dr Pepper. It is obvious to me that I can test something while waiting up for the deer's morning stroll ... 2nd thought ... Screw taking photos of landscape eating rodents I'll broadcast something. Bambuser!

I made one of those SWAG test plans just like a real user; just turn on device and let it tell me how it wishes to setup the broadcast parameters. To summarize: 1) The wifi is off and the phone status told me I am connected HSDPA. 2) Executed Bambuser Android Application and all is fine except, the G2 being a smart phone it had to tell me its connection could handle a higher data rate. Told it to shut up I knew better. What you don't talk to your machines? Your car listens. Anyway before I derail, below are the broadcasts. Top one is the morning run that did not end well, LOS at 7:40 minutes. The bottom run did quite well and the T-Mobile connection bounced near yellow only once during the 1 hour 30 minutes I allocated for testing.

Broadcast at frame size 176x144 This player is scaled to 352x288

A little bit more stressful test -- Broadcast frame size 320x240.

G2 and T-Mobile HSDPA Check -Take 3 ( Comcast WiFi )

Conclusion:

T-Mobile HSDPA was better than WiFi at holding a consistent stream health when broadcasting. The fluctuation was +- a percentage point even when I made the field of view busier by taking some of the static area away. WiFi was a little ahead at holding a higher stream health even though it was +- 5 percentage points "bouncy". I would say in this test, this application, there are other limiting factors involved I have no control over that cause WiFi and HSDPA too be pretty much the same. No fear at using T-Mobile or Comcast to broadcast live from my G2. T-Mobile does, however, hold a better QOS bit rate. Partly because of the nature of WiFi; upstream has variable amounts of buffering.

I have a chicken wire and patch cord audio system. Three different make, model and year speakers. Well, they seemed to have lost the edge they once had. Flat was, well too flat and the bass was rumble city.

The fix is simple use a calibrated source. THX

Usually the BBC or BCCAmerica has short series that are a step above the offerings by ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and cable networks. The exception in the cable network crowd is AMC and to some extent TNT. Lately AMC has jumped way above its rivals with the series Rubicon. There have been other short series on the network but Rubicon has the mood and some of the look of The Eleventh Hour. It just looks BBC; maybe the BBC school of Quality Entertainment?

This "neat and tidy" look has a side effect that is outrageous. Not going to plaster links, video and photos right now but I will say a form of cosmetic surgery has become a growth industry due to that "Classification Board" guideline. Current trend shows the use of Botox and other self image improving solutions by teenage through college girls is increasing at an alarming rate everywhere. However, cosmetic surgery requests in Australia to achieve the above is increasing. No human can look like a magazine cover found in the grocery store much less have genitals that fit above specification. And that is what all photos are in fashion magazines & skin magazines -- made to a specification.

ALL MAGAZINES SHOULD HAVE A BLACK BOX LABEL DISCLOSING THE PHOTOS ARE NOT REAL BUT ARTISTICALLY ENHANCED MODELS.

DVR-118L Hub Lock Broke or Disk had Defect in Plastic?

Update: No warranty issue because drive, at this time, is reading fine; burning some data disks overnight. Working with Verbatim who contacted me on twitter and so far it is positive, results TBA.

Felt the Journal has been ignored for flashier projects and it is publicly readable without the signup hassle or (wrongly) feel DVD rippers are illegal. More than ever a backup of your expensive movie disk should be done.

Machines break, disks become less than 100% unbreakable in normal use. How many $15, $20 or $30 charges to your wallet does the movie industry deserve? One buy with free replacement (100% free no S/H charge) if it breaks or scratch unreadable. Fat chance of that happening. You have to buy a new movie at current price, if it has not gone out-of-print. So, backup the disk.

I had A Murphy's Law night. Record Realplayer window that displayed STS-131 Spacewalk. Final amount of video is just under 50GB, still have to process it into .MOV then edit. Of course a DVD writer is handy to backup source files. Unless a disk commits suicide.

Truthfully I can't be sure who is at fault; hub lock break, disk defect in the hub area plastic. Never happened before - ever.

Working with macsales on twitter. Nice customer support from them. Better than trading e-mail and fast. Naturally once all the ground work is done out comes the phone or e-mail or web page to request RA number. It is nice to just send tweet " it is broke..." and get a real person back to you. With some reserve I made a DVD to test the Blu-ray playback. The manual has a convoluted list of yes, no, maybe, DRM fickle don't even try that disk with stupid footnote references to other pages of user manual. Shoot me now! I may take the TV apart to see the little demon they put in the TV. No regular person will understand that stupid book, i.e., my wife and every grandmother I know.

(Maxwell, my black cat will eat the plastic demon if I get it out).

The Ugly; A great man's likeness has been parodied to sell GMC Station Wagon to my Ford Taurus X Station Wagon driving wife. Better luck next time GM - you are a day late and a dollar short. Make that many dollars short.

I will conclude with a thought experiment. What would Albert Einstein say about this. I think he would be laughing. Still, I cannot refrain from saying it is a little tacky. Credit wife for bringing Albert looking like a abs-climber-bowflex ad model on TeeVee (morning TV before 7:00 AM).

Film - LUX Prize 2009 (via European Communities, 2009 [EbS])

I found this a refreshing moment after the Hollywood (MPAA) and NewsCorp's control all media content. In the can - USofA film makers that means the rubbish bin. Hundreds of TV channels and 2 web portals and it is all junk save a few well written shows or films. Where are the 'media moguls' of the past who wanted to preserve an identity; dead of course. The current batch of producers/distribution brass here in the NaU (North american Union) have not bothered with anything except the profit margin (in a per minute price if they could).

Harsh? Yes, but I do get to spend 80 to 90 percent of my time with 4 cableTV sets and 2 Satellite Radios on 24 hours a day. I may be a bit saturated on Hollywood's Rx for the masses.

Honest the sidekick using my iBook G4 for a snack tray was not staged. Wife casually put turkey with gravy on it because he wanted hers. I was twitter'in on G1 phone and snapped a few shots. The dim light made it necessary to B&W the picture in order to cover up the tungsten lamp color (deep orange for G1's hardware).

Picture cropped to size. No computer damage and I changed her password (did not tell her what it is) for making me hunt down some cleaner.

Live TV on G1 Phone via Stickam Viewer

Introduction:

Some times it is all about the TV. I watch TV on the old iMac G4 Flat Panel more than the big set with all the channels Comcast (Comcast.net) can deliver and I wish to pay for. Why? The simple answer is Twit Live. Created by Leo Laporte it is a buffet of tech and not so tech that streams 24 hours day. A niche that Big Content Providers let slide from their grasp to benefit of us viewers. So, how does one get the show when away from the desk bound computer? One way is the trusty laptop. Maybe that is not possible because you are 2nd seat in the car or you just standing on the corner waiting for a ride.

The mobile phone is always with you, with luck or planning it is a G1 phone (or iPhone/iPod or Nokia). Until now the lack of Adobe Flash on the G1 left us users without a way to watch TWiT Live although the audio track could be heard via StreamFurious. Thankfully Stickam has done the heavy lifting and supplied a viewer for G1 users. It works quite well and I am happy to show a few rough examples of the viewer running.

Setup and Video of G1 Running Stickam Viewer:

Just so there is no misunderstanding; I have never tried to record the G1 playing video. It is trickier than I thought because the touch screen and LCD display interference pattern. See Moire' and DSLR Auto Focus at Komar for more on that. I used the HP ps 733 3.2 MP that has AVI recording as a the recorder. Set the G1 on a tripod using a Frankenstien's monster looking setup of straps, forceps, popsicle sticks and Duct Tape (A.K.A. gaffers or duck). On the 2nd tripod (OSN MX2000) the camera with quick release platform was positioned so there was little moire' pattern cluttering up the shot. As you can see it is not pretty but it works; the Bandaid (tm) does not leave goo on the phone like duck tape will.

Video Attempts:

This first attempt at recording. Focus? Forgot the half press on button to focus it! Also, and this applies to all video here; audio is from phone adapter to Altec Lansing AVS300 or FX 3020 SoundBar I use as monitors. Some audio got +0.5 dB boost in post processing with MPEG StreamClip. The audio track even at full phone volume is too low. That it a source problem and I heard it is at the top of Leo's FixIt list.

Color looks good but thegizwiz looks odd. .. The blink while playing is buffering. I believe that is Stickam's doing because my WiFi connection through an Airport Extreme is plenty fast and my internet connection averages 6 to 8 Mbits/sec down.

NOTE: This try at recording is better but the audio needed a boost therefore the hiss.

I kept this test run for two reasons. Number one; that blink seems to sync audio with video as well as buffering. It is a bit hard to see here in this compress-for-web but the uncompressed source (230MBytes) shows it. Just a theory. Number two; it is a nice reality check speech on windows/Intel by Mr. Gibson. I spent my time writing assembler for both consumer products and process control -- I agree and have felt the pain generated by VB monkeys.

Conclusion and Opinion

I think Stickam did a good job. I am a little confused about the blink while playing even when a high speed connection is used. Stickam Viewer needs to work on Edge, 3G and WiFi so I will wait and see how much better the viewer will get.

What was a major headache getting this done? Top of the list is batteries. The AC to DC power adapter was missing in action. The count of discharged AA = 22. Second to that is the lack of experience using the HP 733 in AVI mode. However, obi one Maxwell, you are my savior because of the show on moire reminded me about angles and patterns. Or was that a dream.

Did I ever say I hate Flash. The statement usually follows the comment that cross browser rendering is painful because of it. Not always is it Flash mucking up things, sometimes other components of a browser will too. If viewing this blog in Safari 3 with Flash 10 it renders fine. If viewing in Firefox 3 with Flash 10 the sidebar widget No Agenda is a mess. Maybe it is not Flash's doing but I am max'd-out on it's other problems and I don't care if it is innocent or not. Try Safari until the problem is fixed.

Why backing up your Purchased Movie DVD is a must

This is what happens when a cheap settop DVD player design allows a simple fall to the floor, upside down. The cover rammed the spindle into the disk. The cheap tray allowed disk to flex and crack.

If there was no backup the replacement would have to be purchased at full retail price. That does not benefit me or you. Backup your investment. No political speech just common sense.

DMCA does not allow fairuse, however, other copyright laws are not excluding the making of a backup. This kind of event, an accident, is not the same as making copies for all you friends. That would be immoral and could make for legal problems.

Point the finger at the accused and they shall be vanquished! Well, we have come a long way from the day that foolishness ruled the general publics behavior. Not really. The RIAA finds it has lost the search and destroy battle in the US of A. So switching to another front that is beyond the messy "confront your accuser in a court of law" that US law requires is a win-win for them. Nibble away at laws in other WIPO members home country and maybe Capital Hill will accept the copyright law of those countries. Of course the courts will be jammed with cases fighting back. But if the RIAA is slow and applies steady force they will win. Money from Hollywood is the grease that silences the squeaky politician.

Let us not forget who RIAA's puppet is:

So there it is, 1 long day of slow H.264 compressing, recompenses, upload click-thru legal stiff and wait for the gate to open on the video site. RIGHT!

Odd Flair-up of Safety at the Grocery Store

My first clue something changed was the disappearance of 8 pound sacks of cat food. Wait one minute I told the conspiracy ranting side brain. It is backordered. But, that popular size has never sold out and was always right there, middle shelf. I began to look around; feeling childish.

The results of looking low then high are; big heavy sack bottom shelf, as they should be. The small sacks where 10 feet up on the top shelf. Of course there was no staircase style ladder in sight, nor stock person. Right, the conspiracy ranting side brain muttered. The image of insurance underwriters designing dry goods displays was equal to gasoline on a fire. "Asinine", I said out loud. I fetched the bag by standing on a 30 pound bucket of litter and wedging the shopping cart to the bottom shelf, then used the cane to knock a very lightweight sack into the cart. "F* idiots" mumble slipped out as I headed to paper goods. Guess where my usual brand of paper towels sit.

Must ask wife if the guy who designs parking lots is learning a new trade.

i knew better, the outcome could be predicted. After fussing with this all afternoon it is getting committed before I get the same treatment. This is how the journal will look.

My Blondness is front and center (in the sidebar that is) and it will show whatever I send to U-tube. Posts will have video if there is a reason, otherwise it is a waste of bandwidth to have it loaded twice. Maybe later Yahoo and Google video players will be added. The use of all 3 of them covers the max size, max play time and quality. As much as I prefer Sorenson 3 I am using H.264 MP4 for blog posts, video.goggle uploads and YouTube. My G1 will also like that; M4V files from iTunes gives it a headache.

Feel free to change the radio station from Chillout to what you like. Photos to be added as soon as I look over the stack of prints and photo disks.
